For A Rainy Day

We've been having beautiful sunny days all week, even yesterday when it was supposed to rain.

During the week I'd read in neighborhood paper that a long-time family umbrella business was going to close by the end of year. They have been in business for over 80 years!  I've known about this business every since I moved to Vancouver but I've never actually purchased an umbrella there.
When I read the story though I decided it was now or never.

I made a point of stopping by the location closest to my home and was disappointed to learn that it was closed. I looked through the windows. It doesn't look like there is much in the way of selection and this particular location will only be upon until Wednesday.

I guess I'm going to have to try and get downtown to it's last open location. Hopefully I'll be able to do that. These days I don't really carry an umbrella but if they have one or tow I like I will purchase them as they are likely to last me a lifetime.

(The next three photos are indicative of our rainy season. These scenes were taken on Vancouver Island at Yellow Point Lodge).

I will also look for a good rain hat though I'm not sure they carry them. I always find it sad to see the end of an era and the closing of family businesses but I certainly understand it.

This is Thanksgiving weekend in Canada. We are having ham at my house this year rather than the traditional turkey. We will have turkey and usual trimmings at Christmas.

I take this time to wish you and yours a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving.

We once had an umbrella sore too. It left because the demand for good oned declined. Everyone seems to go for cheap bargain ones now.
I love you fall colour photo. We are not getting the colours as we have too high teperatures. To date no real frost and that is very new this time of the year.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and all other Canadians from Montreal, Canada! Beautiful photos, and that shop looks like fun!

I gave up with an umbrella years ago the wind is too strong most of the time. I wear a raincoat with a hood instead. Pity they are retiring and closing down with nobody to take over. All the little shops eventually seem to close sadly.
Have a good week and take care Diane

Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving! I have an umbrella in my car, don't use it much but it's good for those downpours!

Looks like a special shop. Here in Japan people use umbrellas, and very colorful ones too, not the folding ones but the full size , so I love how the rainy days become full of colors with all the umbrellas!! Though unfortunately that is changing too, as I have lived here over the years more and more people use the clear ones that are available at the convenient stores!! They are the full size, but not color. Actually I use those too, as the clear ones are...convenient!!! Still, I never saw an umbrella shop, so I love the little storefront on yours. Hope you found an umbrella you`ll treasure!! Blessings and have a nice day!

I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving, Penny. Is it early this year? Seems like I remember it being around the 19th before. Maybe it's the 9th instead! Too bad your close location was closed. I could use a new umbrella. Most of mine have something wrong -- they don't close all the way or they don't pop up as they should or one of the tines is broken but I keep them around because when you need one, you need it now!

There is something sad about the closing of such an old-established store. I hear there are lots of days with rain in Vancouver, I simply wonder why they have to close shop. I like to go out with my favorite umbrella on a rainy day. The signboard and the three umbrella lights on it look interestingly antique. How fabulous the fall colors! We have to wait at least one month in my part of the world.

Hi Jeanie, Thanksgiving falls on the 2nd Monday of October each year. It does seem a bit earlier to me too this year but I enjoyed my feast on Sunday rather than Monday. It allowed me to go and enjoy the waterfront on Monday. Many photos to be shared later in this space. I know what you mean about umbrellas that no longer work well.

Hello Yoko, I agree there is something sad in closing a long established store. In this case, they have been running the store for several generations and I think they believe no one is interested in quality anymore. You are right, we get a lot of rainy days here and so we must be prepared otherwise we will spend too much time indoors. Thank you for stopping by!

Hi Shayndel, I have never used a clear umbrella but they certainly do make seeing easier I'm sure :-)

Thank you very much for your visit and comment. You really do live in such a beautiful place! We loved Vancouver! Coincidentally we're getting rainy weather here in Hawaii too.

I have not seen such a shop only for umbrellas. They must have man unique collections. It would be a great sad news for the people living there to miss such a wonderful shop. I usually have one umbrella in my handbag by default.

The umbrella shop looks really cool, it is nice to see a buisness that old still thriving. Here in England due things like recession we have lost some really good shops that I loved going in as a child. Have a lovely thanksgiving xxx
