Countdown to Christmas ~ Tuesday 4
Hello and welcome once again to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 where 4 questions hopefully help us to blog, meet people and think about things in general.
Sometimes the simplest questions can be a bit difficult to answer.
Today's topic is the countdown to Christmas.
1. What was the countdown to the holidays like for you as a child? Special projects at school.. at home.. with friends? Do you use an advent calendar?
The lead up to Christmas was always a special time. Every year our schools and our churches would prepare by rehearsing a play about the birth of Christ and also rehearse for the singing of Christmas carols. I was in our small church choir and always enjoyed the singing but I was never into acting. I remember having to play an angel once and I was so nervous for weeks on end and on the day of the performance. I didn't have the same issue in the choir because I didn't sing solo.
At home we kids didn't have much to do but we were so excited with the anticipation of eating all the wonderful baking our dear mom would make each year. In fact, when she wasn't home I'd sneak into the crock pots and try to help myself without it being noticed. Many years later mom and I had a good laugh about it as she admitted knowing what was going on, lol!
No one that I knew ever used an advent calendar and in fact I never even heard of one until well into adulthood. Now I usually send one to my niece in advance of Christmas. This year I didn't get a chance to send her an advent calendar due to our mail strike.
2. As a kid did your family stay home on the holidays or go visiting around ... what do you do now?
We always stayed home at the holidays. My mother was known for her wonderful cooking and every major holiday, including Christmas she would make so much food and people would drop by all day and into the night to eat and to visit. She loved being of service in this way.
These days I stay home because now I make the dinner. Sometimes I host people, either family members or friends for dinner. I'd like to host moreo often but my energy levels simply aren't there when it comes to holidays.
3. What foods did Mom and Grandma make for those days? What snacks were out? What is the food situation in your home today?
In those days the usual menu for Christmas was the traditional bread stuffed turkey and all the fixings like mashed potatoes, green beans, corn niblets, tomato and lettuce salad, coleslaw with raisins, Hawaiian salad, gravy and a variety of canapés (sausages, crackers, cheeses, pickles) and snacks (nuts, chips, dips etc. Desserts were plentiful too with jellies, cakes, puddings, dessert bars, pies and ice cream. Growing up I always felt that we prepared way too much food because there was always a lot left over though people ate a lot too.
I resolved to make far less food once I started cooking myself especially since I don't have an 'open' house. I strive to make plenty of food so people can eat their fill plus have a bit left over for later.
4. What is Christmas dinner for you and yours? Goose? Turkey? English Roast Beef?
Christmas dinner is usually stuffed turkey because I'm very traditional that way. However I will often make something different, like ham for New Year's Dinner especially if we had turkey for Thanksgiving and Christmas and we are feeling 'turkied out', lol.
As the years go by, I'm wonder how long I'll be making a larger holiday meal. I keep saying, I'll make a chicken instead of turkey. But last Christmas and again for the most recent Thanksgiving, we had a smaller turkey instead. That way I got to stuff it because a turkey doesn't seem complete to me without stuffing. If I can find a small turkey for Christmas dinner we will have that again this year. We also have mashed potatoes, baked Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, various types of salads, pickles, cranberry sauce, gravy and some kind of dessert. Snacks usually consist of a variety of cheeses, crackers, pickles and crudités.

Advice: 5 c ~ Tuesday 4 Meme
1. Is there one piece of advice you were given that you feel has been very important in your life?
Yes, to stand up for what I think is right even if I have to stand alone. In my lifetime there have been occasions when I've had to implement this advice and stay strong on my own (and of course with the help of God).
In later adult, years I heard a quote by Sir Winston Churchill I also took to heart. Perhaps you've heard it.
“You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.” (Sir Winston Churchill).
The reason I found it helpful is I have a tendency to drop everything to help someone else who perceives they need a listening ear. I get this from my later mother who was very giving and very self-sacrificing. It's a symptom of how she was raised as a motherless daughter and the expectations others placed on her. Over a long period of doing this, I realized that it was hampering my ability to get things done, whether large or small, because there could be so many interruptions in a day.
These days, I strive for a better balance between making myself available, especially at crucial times, and focussing on my own goals and priorities. It's a form of self-care and it's also a way to be a better steward of the time God has given me.
2. What advice do you think is important for building good personal relationships?
Understanding that every person has a story and sometimes they need someone to listen to it. It's also important to really listen to others and try not to give them too much unsolicited advice. The longer and the better I get to know someone, the more I get a sense of when to keep opinions to myself and when to offer advice. Of course, some people straight out ask for advice.
One thing I've learned in this life's journey is that there are also people who are known as energy vampires. These are people who sometimes intentionally, drain your emotional energy. They feed on your willingness to listen and care for them, leaving you exhausted and overwhelmed. I have actually met several of these kinds of people especially when I was just starting out on my own. Once I recognized the situation, I had to learn to put up boundaries and sometimes even cut out certain kind of people, especially those that like to complain a lot and look to you to prop them up emotionally. We all need a bit of this kind of emotional support, however when it is constant and overwhelming, it's my belief that someone needs professional assistance.
3. Do you give advice to friends when they have problems to solve or do you refrain unless asked?When I was a young adult I often gave advice, solicited or not. These days I refrain from giving advice unless I'm asked. Even then I don't readily offer detailed advice.
4. What advice can you give us today?
Be grateful for each day because tomorrow is not promised to us. That is what I'm trying to do myself. Also, it's good to learn to be content in life and to honour what the Lord has given to us. I get inspiration from the Apostle Paul in this regard who said (Philippians 4:11-13, NIV).
11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry,whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Happy Autumn ~ Tuesday 4

Welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4... are you ready for Autumn?
Sunday September 22 is the Autumnal Equinox, the first day of the Autumn season. Let's talk about it okay?
1. Are there pumpkins or chrysanthemums on your porch or are you planning on putting some out?
No. I don't have a porch but I also don't care for mums or using seasonal decor except at Christmas. Even that is minimal.
2. What seasonal changes are you noticing in your part of the world? What would you add or take away?
I've noticed a drastic change in temperature. We've had some lovely sunny days with brilliant, blue skies but we are now in the period where rain can happen at any time. If I could add or take away, I would increase the temperatures just a wee bit and take away some rainy days. We do need rainy days to keep our trees and grass green.
3. Is pumpkin pie on the menu for you this fall? How about pumpkin spice or pumpkin latte coffee flavors? Are you a fan? Spiced teas? What do you like?4. If there was a free week long tour of New England, complete with peak colors and a trip to Plimouth, Massachusetts (the colony site with historical players), would you come along? If that doesn't suit, where would you like to go for your Autumn trip?
Absolutely. I love autumn colours. The closest I've gotten to the beautiful autumn colours in the east is in Quebec and southern Ontario. In fact, many years ago I took my mother on an escorted Fall Colour Tour and we both enjoyed it so much. The foliage was absolutely spectacular. We get beautiful foliage here in BC too but not so many deep reds (maple trees) which I absolutely love. An alternative trip would be to New York City. I think it would be the perfect season for walking and sightseeing in Manhattan.

September Musings ~ Tuesday 4
September is back to school month and even if you are an adult now, you can usually still recall the back to school days. It was a new beginning.. sometimes scary, sometimes joyous. New experiences were awaiting you.
1. As summer's heat fades do you get out and about in nature often ? Where do you go, what do you do? What would you like to do?
I get out more in the Fall and Spring than I do in other seasons. Mostly I love to go to places where I can take a walk by the waterfront. I enjoy the photo opportunities at the waterfront.
2. What has changed in your life that you miss/regret the most?
I miss my university days mostly because I had a very active social life and people were more ready to get together for any reason to have a potluck or a dance/fundraiser or to invite one another to their homes for a dinner. These days it's like pulling teeth to get together with anyone and that includes family members. Everyone is so busy and I fall into that category myself. It's sometimes even hard to make phone calls or to receive them but it's important to try and make an effort. At least, I believe it's important. Sadly, not everyone I know agrees with me except for people who are older than me. Perhaps I wouldn't be missing these 'olden' days but a lot of people I know have moved away and haven't kept in touch or they have passed from this life.
3. Money is no object, nothing stands in your way... are you going to move or stay where you are?
I would be moving within the city but I already know that it would be difficult to find a place that fits my requirements. I'd love a larger space with roof top amenities for gardening and entertaining. I'd also like a building that isn't too high in case of fire and I'd love a view with an apartment that isn't too close to everyone else and has a lot of space, preferably green between buildings. If money was no object, I would also like a cottage getaway at the lake.

Autumn Reading ~ Tuesday 4

Happy September friends and welcome once again to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4.
The Autumnal Equinox is September 21 and it is the actual beginning of Autumn. Many, however, consider Labor Day as the unofficial opening of the Autumn season of the "Ber" Month
1. What's on your reading list for September?
I've got several books on the go for the month. At present I have 4 books at various stages of completion though mostly I've just started on all of them. You can view my last post here where I mention the books I'm currently reading.
2. Does your favourite reading nook look anything like the one in the picture or do you wish it did?
I don't really have a favourite reading nook or a nook at all. I just have a convenient spot on one end of my sofa which is where I sit and also watch television and or knit. I usually take a book with me or have one on my device and read wherever I am and will often stop and have a coffee just so I can read for a bit.I really wish I did have a reading nook like the one in the photo and I may yet have one if and when I ever 'finish' with decluttering and reorganizing.
3. Can you name some books you've read many times? Do you recommend them?
I don't think I've actually read any book many times (unless you count the Bible) and I can't even recall what few books I've read at least twice though I do recall thinking or wondering why I liked a book so much the first time around. It didn't seem to great the second time around.
4. Which of the classics have you read?
I've read a number of classics. Probably too many to mention in full. Books like Little Women, David Copperfield and several others by Charles Dickens, Moby Dick, Anna Karenina, Crime and Punishment, To Kill a Mockingbird, Pride & Prejudice and almost all of Jane Austen's other books, Jane Eyre, Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies, Gone with the Wind, Withering Heights, East of Eden, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Kite Runner, Heart of Darkness, The Alchemist and many more. For so many years, I did not read the classics unless I had too. Now I have a loose goal to read more (no specific number) and to include them amongst the books I select to read each year. I see some people counted the number of classics they've read. That's a great idea and I should go back and do the same!
I've also read many books that are not considered classics. I just love to read and challenge myself each year to read more than one a month. I also love to read the Bible and reading it from one cover to the next in chronological order as presented has been quite interesting, informative and inspirational.

Tuesday 4: A Little Tea Party
Welcome back to another of Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 hosted by Annie of Cottage by the Sea.
This week could we talk about your personal thoughts?
1. Do you find yourself daydreaming about your situation and things you would love to do if only ...?
Yes, the thing on my mind for some time now is if I can just get through all the decluttering and little jobs there are to do around the home, I can finally start doing some creative and more fun projects and possibly make plans for the future. Recent water leak and strata projects set my own timeline back considerably because I didn't have access to all of my things. I still can't see the end in sight to the household tasks though I do see progress.
2. If you are having tea/coffee, a little break in the day does your mind wander off to other thoughts and meditations.
No, not really. When I'm having coffee, I usually use that time to catch up on email, blogging, recorded TV programs or a bit of reading/study so my mind is already occupied.
3. Do you find yourself meditating or revisiting in your mind a scripture, verse from a book you've read and it's impact on you?
Yes, I often meditate on scriptures. I did a lot of scripture memorization as a youngster. These scriptures come to me often during alone time, while going through life's events, having discussions with family and friends and whenever I watch or read Christian and secular material.
4. Do you find yourself sometimes replaying conversations with others? Are there books or movies that stay vivid in your mind?
I don't replay conversations with other these days but when I was younger I did. Especially when I was a junior high schooler and spent a lot of time walking to and fro to school. I had plenty of time for replaying conversations and thinking because I had a long walk to school and back. As I grew into adulthood and had different relationships of work and a personal nature, I also spent time thinking about and replaying conversations. Usually I was thinking about tensions with someone and what I might have said in discussions instead of what I did say. I don't do this anymore either.
I have many movies and books that I've enjoyed over the years but I seldom think about them afterward. The ones that have really stayed with me tend to be from when I was very young and perhaps more impressionable. Three movies that really stuck in my memory for a long time include: Anna Karenina with Vivian Leigh in the titular role of Anna, The Red Shoes and a Brief Encounter.
Three books that stayed with me a long time after reading them were: The Poisonwood Bible, The Kiterunner and A Fine Balance.
These books and movies are not necessarily my favourites though some of them are. It's just that they somehow remained in my brain much longer than others did.

Childhood ~ Tuesday 4
Welcome to Toni's Tuesday 4 and another chance to learn more about yourself and your fellow bloggers.
1. Were you an adventurous child at all?
I don't think I would describe myself as a very adventurous child. My mother was overly protective with me as the eldest and a girl. I was always told about the dangers out there and my time to do the normal things was strictly limited and observed. I developed a fear of doing a lot of things that other children did more naturally such as swimming, riding a bike and skating. I did do all of these things eventually but none too well and to this day I really don't do any of them. All of my siblings took to these activities very naturally. I suppose too they were given a lot more freedom given that by then mom and dad had more experience as parents. However they were still given strict instructions about when to be home and so on. I'm glad for these kind of rules when I was young but wish I didn't become so fearful. It's something I've tried to work on in later life with some success.
2. What were some of your favorite places to go when you were a child? Amusement parks, movies, restaurants, zoo. etc?
I enjoy all of these things as a child. My small town didn't have a zoo but each year the circus would come to town and practically everybody would attend. I enjoyed it a lot and was always nervous when the lion trainers would work with tigers and lions. This was in the days before such things as animal rights. I'm not even sure if there is such a thing as a travelling circus anymore in small town Canada. We didn't have amusement parks though once a year in late summer just before school started again, we would have the Fall Fair and Rodeo. The fair always included the carnival and was something we loved to visit into the late nights. We did have one movie theatre and dear mom would make sure that I went to matinees either with her or with my siblings and of course we'd have popcorn and pop for a treat. Restaurants were very few but we did get out to the Woolworth's Cafe once a month when mom went shopping or when it was back to school shopping. We also had a chinese restaurant where we had a treat now and then but not that often.
3. What games did you play outdoors? indoors?
We played every game that was known in our parts both indoors at outdoors. Indoors at school we played things like dodgeball, volleyball, basketball, indoor hockey and probably more. Outdoors we played a lot of soccer, road hockey, baseball, cricket, track and field, hide and seek, roll over & tetherball. I feel like I'm missing something from the list of games and sports. For quiet games indoors we played all kinds of things like card games (Crazy 8, solitaire, some played poker and some played cribbage) and board games (snakes and ladders, Chinese Checkers, Yahtzee and so on). In summer it would stay bright outside. Even at midnight it would be like dusk so we kids did a lot of playing outdoors in those times. We even played outdoors in winter because the sun would shine brightly and though it did get cold it wasn't cold each and every day. We'd make snowmen and have snowball fights.
4. Where did you grow up and do you think it affected who you are today?
