Learning to Swim

I mentioned before that I was going to start swimming lessons. I have now taken my second lesson. I'm enjoying it and since these are private lessons we will be going very slowly through the training.

It isn't the first time I have tried to learn how to swim. In fact I can swim a little but it is deeper water that frightens me. I need to get over my fear and anxiety of deep water before I can truly learn to swim.

My instructor is a young Chinese man who himself learned to swim as an adult. I'm enjoying his approach very much and it is quite different to any lessons I've previously had so I'm feeling optimistic.

How about you my readers? Are any of you unable to swim, have a fear of water or learned rather late in life? I'd love to hear your story.

Good for you for taking on swimming lessons again! I was pushed into the deep end of the pool when I was about 9 or 10 and discovered that I could swim better than I thought! After that I was an avid swimmer until I became an adult, but have no access to anywhere to swim unless I'm staying in a hotel with a pool or something like that. Good Luck!!!!

Cheers to you for learning how to swim. I live in Florida and learning how to swim is almost a requirement to live here (laugh). I am not a strong swimmer but, manage in most situations. The more you submit to the freedom of the water the easier it will become.

Velva, good for you for knowing how to swim and being able to manage in most situations. If I can get to that level I will be very happy :-)

Swimming is good exercise and a skill for safety around water. Never too late to learn. Glad that you are happy with your instructor's approach because it will likely lead to your success.

I have actually never learned how to swim and always thought that as an adult maybe it is too late but you have encouraged me. I now need to look for an instructor here in Nairobi!!

Hi Debbie, it is wonderful you can swim. I'm sorry you don't have a place to swim now but isn't it wonderful to use a hotel pool? Usually it isn't very crowded :-)

Velva, you are so fortunate to have learned to swim early in life. If I can get to be as good as you I will be happy :-)

OtienoHongo, thank you for your recent follow. I'm so happy my post encouraged you to swim. I say it is never to old to learn anything as long as you can get around and you can still think you can learn most things :-) Good luck with finding an instructor in Nairobi. If you should have any problems finding one, you might wish to enquire at the YMCA in that city as they do have a swimming pool. Perhaps they even give lessons as they do here :-)
KleinsteMotte, you are so right. Even learning to swim is good exercise. The last lesson I had to flutter kick my legs. To do it right and to do it for a sustained period is a good workout!
Thank you Karen! I appreciate your visit :-)

Affectioknit, thank you too!

Very encouraging that you have a sympathetic teacher for your swimming lessons!
We don't swim much, but we were at a pool in January and I can still just manage to swim.
Hugs and Blessings
